Illegal gets 21 years and cane for raping Malaysian

SINGAPORE: An Indian national who dragged a screaming Malaysian woman into a rubbish area and raped her was jailed 21 years and ordered to be given the maximum 24 strokes of the cane, a news report said yesterday.

Justice V.K. Rajah rebuked V. Murugesan, 28, for showing contempt for all norms of civilised behaviour and said a “draconian” sentence was warranted, according to The Straits Times.

Murugesan, an illegal immigrant, and an Indian accomplice abducted the woman on March 5, 2004 and forced her into the enclosed area.

The victim's screams alerted residents in nearby apartments, who called the police.

The two escaped after taking turns attacking the woman, the report said, but were captured more than two weeks later.

The Indian accomplice, Manikkam, 30, was earlier sentenced to 14 years' jail and 10 strokes of the cane.

The judge said Murugesan “orchestrated the incident” and needed to be punished severely for both retribution and deterrence of others.

“Rape is one of the most heinous and vile crimes,” leaving victims with “permanent emotional scars,” Justice Rajah was quoted as saying. – dpa

Symantec releases public beta of its anti-spyware suite

Symantec Corp. has released the public beta version of its integrated Internet security solution that provides protection from spyware and adware to home users.

Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition is being designed to provide real-time detection and automatic removal of spyware from users' computers and prevent new spyware risks from impacting the PC in the future. This new anti-spyware functionality will be integrated into Norton Internet Security, Symantec's Internet security solution.

The company plans for Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition to be available for purchase by retail and OEM customers in the second quarter of the year.

Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition is being built with multiple scanning levels. Symantec claims that, unlike other antispyware products, Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition identifies spyware at the point of entry, leveraging Symantec's mechanisms already in use to block viruses today.

On-demand scanning options will include full system scans and scheduled scans as well as Norton QuickScan. Symantec's Automatic LiveUpdate technology will deliver protection updates for new security risks on a regular basis. Norton QuickScan will begin scanning by default immediately upon receipt of the latest protection updates to detect active spyware without requiring user intervention.

In addition, Norton Personal Firewall, a component of Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition, will provide on-communication scanning by monitoring the data leaving a user's computer. This real-time, network-level, behavior-based detection helps protect privacy by preventing personal information from being transmitted without the user's knowledge. This additional layer of security automatically blocks spyware and other malicious applications from establishing outbound connections to the Internet.

In addition to spyware protection, Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition will continue to include the firewall, intrusion prevention, privacy protection, virus protection, spam filtering, and content filtering features.
